"My SILK GRAFFITI tells a story, one which is both strong and ethereal, both spontaneous and labored. I'm most interested in the stark juxtaposition between my materials: luxurious, often feminine, silk and rough-and-tough nails. I choose to work in a sparkly, luxe material commonly used in dress makings and interior textiles, natural Dupioni silk. I shred the silk, letting it deconstruct, and hand-form the letters directly onto the wall of any well-loved and lived-in quarter or even an event space, much like how a street artist throws a tag up on a crumbling exterior wall. SILK GRAFFITI is a one-of-a-kind, on-site installation and unique to the individual, as I often use the favorite words of the client as inspiration for the piece itself.
The process of creating my SILK GRAFFITI installations is one of push and pull, restraint and courage, and delicateness and boldness. It can be created in a variety of scales, colors, and styles. The beauty is in the details and the perfectly imperfect layers of the tangled silk strings, pieced silk letters, and scattered wire nail heads. Lighting can transform the piece too, bringing out all the nubby irridescence of the silk and the glittery metallic nails. And SILK GRAFFITI only gets better with age. Natural elements, like the breeze from an open window running through the silk strands, help to further deconstruct the SILK GRAFFITI into a more drippling, tangled web of silk and nails as it matures." - XO AC

JULIA WEST, PHILADELPHIA CITY PAPER, on SILK GRAFFITI by Aubrie Costello:
"COSTELLO ACCOMPLISHES THIS FEAT BY SHREDDING SILK AND HANGING IT TO FORM TEXT, BALANCING BOLD BLOCK LETTERS WITH DELICATE FIBERS. THESE STRIPS DRIP FROM THE EDGES OF EACH CHARACTER TO CREATE AN AUTHENTIC — IF NOT RICHLY ENHANCED — VERSION OF THE WRITING ON THE WALLS."
